Dental implants are top-notch dental restorations that replace your missing teeth and help you have the smile you want and need. Because the treatment can be quite complex, many people have questions about implants. If you’re one of these people, our dentists, Dr. Cody Skinner and Dr. Derrick Schop, are happy to help you find the answers. The more you know, the better! To help you, he is happy to give you the answers to these commonly asked questions about dental implants:
Q: What are dental implants?
A: Dental implants are strong dental restorations that include a titanium post, an abutment and a false tooth (dental crown). The post is implanted into the jawbone and then the jawbone heals around the post to secure it. Then, your dentist places an abutment piece on the post and starts the process of your dental crown creation. When your crown is ready, your dentist will secure it over the abutment to give you the replacement tooth.
Q: How long does it take to place a dental implant?
A: It does require a bit of time to place a dental implant. Typically, three to six months are required to allow the bone to heal around the implant post. Then, one to two weeks are required to make the dental crown. If a bone graft is required before the treatment begins, that adds more time.
Q: How do I know I’m a candidate for a dental implant?
A: Those who have missing teeth and a strong jawbone are great candidates for dental implants. However, you can still be a candidate if you have a weak jawbone; you’ll just need a bone graft first. Feel free to call our office and schedule an appointment to see if you’re a candidate for dental implant treatment!
